Do yourself a favor...

Buy some avocados, just do it.

Right now is near peak season, so they are abundant and cheap.

Make some guac, put them on a sandwich, make sushi, hell just toss them at cars, I don't really care.

I am just saying, buy avocados.

Nada Importante.

Seems like most of my posts are being prefaced with an apology for my lack of posting. This time I will abstain from such nonsense and just talk about what I am doing right now.

I hung out with my Montana chum Uberstatic last night, it was a blast even if it was just the two of us. After his shift peddling smut, I picked him up and headed over to my casa to drop off some beer and groceries. We walked down to the little crappy restaurant/bar that is 2 blocks from my house, those loyal readers will remember it as the restaurant I was (am) interested in buying eventually. This entire area is getting more affluent, not to the point of gentrification mind you, but people in my neighborhood are for sure complete with more cash. Just walking around the neighborhood and looking at the cars people are driving is for sure indicative of this change. Not just that but there are so many yoga places, salons, holistic healing shops and other yuppie themed businesses. So this run down, blue collar pizza place is beginning to feel a little out of place. Not to mention that the food sucks, probably near the worst I have had. Instead of tables, the place is just full of pool tables and video games. Such undertakings space, such potential. I can imagine gutting the place out and getting pimping the place out with a tactful and nice atmosphere, it would go over big. We were pretty much the only people in the place, and that was even with them offering 2 for 1 beers. Don't get me wrong, it was nice to be able to have our own bar to ourselves, but I just cannot imagine that they could be making any cash. The food was just frozen sysco based crap fried or microwaved, the rib tips were practically 50% fat swimming in Sysco Imperial BBQ sauce so much that they were disgusting. We did have some french fries, which were exactly what should be expected, but the bleu cheese on the side was gross. I remember years ago La.Beck and I got some pizza or something there, and we had to swap out the plates as they were given dirty with cigarette ashes on them, again gross. Anyway I think I would be able to make a really nice restaurant in that spot, but I just lack the skills I need to find the cash and build the place. Although it might not be a bad idea to talk to some of my prior employers about investing both time and money in the project, hmm. First though back to school.

Hell the place isn't even for sale (that I know), and it would need lots of work.

Uber and I played pool and big buck hunter for a couple of hours and returned to my house where we met up with his girlfriend. I cook the both of them some udon noodles with tofu, miso and sugar snap peas, as always it was good. It was nice just having people over at my house and chilling, not really entertaining as much as hanging out. Most of the time I just meet people out on the town, so it was a good change of pace. Not to mention it is always cheaper to just cook here, and most of the time better.

Kim and I met up to do some bookshopping, or at least she did. I like to just grab a couple of cookbooks and steal ideas, most of the time I don't actually buy anything. The staff usually doesn't give me any grief, and even if they did what is the worst the could happen? I guess they could kick me out, which wouldn't really affect me much. The ride back was windy, but surprisingly fast. I was playing cat and mouse with a bus for a while, but one red light and I was 1/2 a mile in front. I hate hate hate sucking bus tailpipe.

Alright menu writing time.

Fafsa

Alright straight to the good stuff.

I got my Fafsa filled out, good chance that I am going to be once again a student here this coming fall. I have a bunch of credits under my belt, so it seems silly to not graduate. Also I really want some sort of a master's degree and that will be hard to obtain without the undergrad first. If I want to own my own restaurant it would be a good thing to know a bit more about how business works. I have an appointment the fifth of next month with my advisor (whom I have yet to meet) so I should know the quickest route to enable me to "reach my goals". My point of view is going to be that I don't really care what my undergrad major is, I just want the degree.

Aside from that, I have just enjoying the fine Minneapolis weather that we have been blessed with over the last few days. Supposedly we are set to have even better weather in the next two days, which so happen to be my days off from work. I think it might be time to break out some of my "good weather" bikes, the '85 trek 720 is yearning for some attention, and the Kona has not been ridden in at least 6 months.

Mi pobrecita hermanita got her purse stolen last night, my heart goes out to you kid.

Aside from that, I am seriously considering getting a dog, but then again if I work full time, school full time that would leave precious little time for a Perrito. I swear my desire for getting a dog has absolutely NOTHING to do with how it would help me pick up women, nothing at all.

Mist Conec

I finally got my first missed connection, although I don't know how much it actually counts. This one is from someone I am pretty dang certain already likes me, so the "missed" aspect of the equation doesn't really come into play. Funny thing is that I didn't even notice it was directed towards me, eventhough I read through those craigslist adds religiously. Brklyn girl spilled the beans about 10 minutes before I talked to my little sis, when she noticed the ad independently. Well I have been waiting for a missed connection of my own for a couple of year now, and now I have one. Awesome.

I worked all day, mostly typing recipes from the hand-written versions to a digital copy. I think I typed at least 100 recipes this afternoon, most of them I will never even use again, but there is the off chance that someone will. I have this bad tendency of trying to do everything independently, which perhaps is a product of my narcissism. People in America aren't really encouraged to think about people other than themselves, while at the time time made to feel guilty when they don't think of others. Can you say catch 22? There is a delicate balance between being self absorbed and altruistic.

I saw syriana tonight, good film even if it is a clooney production.

Again and Finally.

Do you all remember how excited I was that I finally got my cable modem fixed?

Well it was all for nothing, yesterday I awoke to the same problems I had been experiencing for the last month or so.

Everything was new in my house though, new modem, new outlet, new line from the street, new ground etc. The only thing I could postulate that was going on was that the new modem was broken. To credit the people down at TW, they did come and replace the old modem with a new one within 3 hours of my calling and bitching. This was the 6th appointment I had with them though. Think at least 3 hours of waiting a pop times 6 times, that is almost 20 hours in the last month where I was just killing time waiting for the cable guy. Pisses me off a little. They did lower my rate for the next 6 months, but I am thinking about calling and getting some more compensation, like a month or two free.

Especially considering that one of the cable guys stole my Phillips head screwdriver, bastard.

Tracy is leaving out of town again today, California for something. It might be a bike trip, I don't really know.

My house is a total disaster, I have boxes full of crap that will be on it's way out of my house here soon, but for the time being it is just sitting here cluttering up the living room. I am trying to clean out the little bedroom and get it ready to rent out, as now it seems I am going to be staying here for a little while longer. If I am able to, I am going to try and buy the house instead of just sell it and split the proceeds. I still have to talk to a mortgage person and see if I can afford it without a cosigner. Either way I am going to need to get a roommate. I am thinking about just moving my bed down to the littler room on the first floor and renting out the 2nd floor bedroom, probably more marketable that way. The first floor rooms is kind of small, but that is ok with me and my purposes.

I bleached my hair again, third time in a week. Still despite my best attempts I can only get strawberry blonde, platinum just continually eludes me.

Back Online?

Well the cable guy(s) were just out here helping me get my ass back online. It took them almost 3 hours and 2 men in order to fix the problem. They replaced all the drops and wires inside the house, as well as laid a fresh ground and new outlet. So now there is no reason why my internet shouldn't be working. And as of right now it seem to be working just ducky.

But I have errand to run, I have been waiting around for the last 6 hours and still have stuff to do, like buy more hair bleach :)

Bout Time.

So my house is getting clean again, and yes the internet is choosing to be working right now (god knows why).

My entire week is already booked up with appointments and work, even my days off are looking really full right now.

Well onto food..

I made Vegan pasta again tonight, this time a tomato/basil trenette. The recipe was really easy, basically instead of eggs or water I just used tomato puree, which gave the dough not only flavor but liquid and color. The proportions I used were about the following, 20 cups semolina, 6 cups tomato puree, 1/4 cup dried basil, 1/4 cup olive oil, 1/4 c salt and a little extra water just to bind things together. The cool thing about making pasta now is that I have the cute little transmission arm, which enables us to cut the pasta about 20 times faster. I rolled out 5 pounds of pasta tonight and it took me only about 1/2 hour, close to a new record. Now I am thinking seriously about buying more of the die cutter blades for my machine. Why be limited to just trenette when I can have lasagnette or tagliatelle..

Tomorrow we shall see how the pasta actually sells, hold your breath with anticipation people.

Considering.

Considering how much I usually update, I again would like to apologize to all of you loyal readers out there who are jonesing for a little Phil-Update.

Well my internet still isn't working yet, I am just typing this from work. They we supposed to have come and replaced the drop to the house from the pole, but as of this writing it has yet to be done. One good thing is that they are going to be lowering my payment by 15 dollar for the next 6 months, which I cannot complain about. Although I don't know if I will still be living in the same place come September, so it might just not matter much.

The Brooklyn Queen is right now riding the bus back from La Guardia to her little apartment in the trendy area of Park Slope. She was supposed to fly out last night, but for some reason the flight was canceled, something like no flight crew. I wonder if NWA is going on strike or something, that might explain the lack of workers. Either way it was a pleasant surprise to find out that I was able to spend another night with her. I was able to take her to my favorite of favorite movie theaters, the Riverview which is about 4 blocks from my house. The movie really was pretty dang lame, some Jim Carrey film about robbing Head Shops or something. I was pretty glazed over, just enjoying the best popcorn in the state and the company of Brooklyn Girl.

But she had to fly out this morning, it was sad.

What else?

Tracy is back from Mexico, she was gone for a week. Now she is going to leave again this Saturday for California for another week. In the last 6 weeks she has been gone a total of 4 weeks, not bad really. Vacations in Kenya, Mexico and California, really makes me want to travel more. I am at least in a position now where if I plan things well enough I should be able to take some good chunks of time off, and vacations are never a bad thing. There is the little issue about money, but I figure I can always just sell a bike or two and use that to fund any excursions.

I am thinking about buying myself a big honking old truck. Like a Chevy C-10 or something, just something large and fun. The type of vehicle that would really bring out my Montana heritage. You know a Truck that would look good with a gun rack that goes along with my black cowboy boots. Now do I need a truck like that? Honestly no, but that doesn't mean I wouldn't want one. I hardly drive anyway, so it might be fun to have something older which I could do most of the repair work on. I also have a feeling it would be much cheaper to insure, just a hunch.

Alright well almost time to do some actual work.

Broken Cable Still.

Tomorrow should (hope) be the final day of my shotty internet. The third visit by the time-w@rner guy in a little less than month, if he doesn't fix it I will just cancel and spend more time at the Chatterbox.

So I have been dang busy with work and visitors in the last couple of days, my apologies that I have not been that great with updating.

Now first off, that broken pasta machine, well it is broken no longer. I got a new gear set from some guy out of San Francisco, and with that I was able to revive my love from the dead. The machine now works better and quieter than before, not to mention I bought the transmission arm. The transmission arm was a connection from the motor to the die-cutter blade, so no longer will I have to get a screw driver to use the Trenette attachment.

My mechanical abilities are getting better and better as of late, today I didn't just fix the pasta machine, but I also fixed 2.5 kitchen-aid mixers. The point five is due to the fact that one of them will actually require a new part to be in full working order. The machine that isn't even working a little is the same one that I just picked up from the service center up in Blaine a week ago. I was sick of driving 12 miles each way, just to get a crappy old mixer working, so I tried to fix it myself. I know what is wrong, but I need to order a couple of parts to get it working again. So in fact I may be subjected to another long drive, because they didn't fix it right the first two times.

Well aside from that, I have just been doing lots of entertaining.

Having guests is fun, borderline illegal fun.

Tragedy Strikes.

The gears are stripped out on my pasta machine. Than means my dreams of running Vegan pasta aren't going to be realized next week. That my friend is really upsetting to say the least. I will be able to fix the gears, without much of a problem. The issue comes in actually locating them, which is easier said than done. I don't know of a single supplier here in the twin cities, which means that I am going to have to do some heavy duty web searching, which is hindered a little with my broken internet connection.

I might have to learn enough Italian to communicate directly with the manufacturer, that seems like the best idea.

Closer than I think.

I just got my two (read that two) articles written for the B-Wood Newsletter. I have now been searching out different restauraunts that offer wi-fi, I was in need of a little food not just coffee/beer. I have realized the food offerings at the c@tterbox aren't really the greatest, as a co-worker put it, straight sysco. So I am right now at the R@il Station, even closer to my house. This place though is more anti-hipster than hipster. Blue collar to the max, reminds me of Montana a little. But the beer and the burgers are cheap, the wifi is working at fast, so what do I have to complain about? I am just sitting here by myself typing away anyway, fairly oblivious to the goings on around me, so I may just have another place to hang out. My decision will be made once I get my pepperjack burger, so we shall see. I hope that when I get back to my house, there will be a new line strung out to the pole and a phone waiting to be activated for my papa. He is going to be moving a little ways from Missoula here soon, and isn't able to take the number he has had for over 20 years with him. Talking to the folks down at Sprint, I am able to transfer his number over to a cell phone and just add it onto my plan. This also means that he will be able to talk to myself and hereNT completamente gratis, big bonus.

Someone just walked by asking me if I wanted to take part in the "Meat Raffle" no joke.

Well the fries are good, but then again fatty starch usually is.

I should eat now, I will post my newsletter articles a little later in the evening.

Cable Problems.

Well I found out how much my house was worth, not nearly as much as I had previously thought. This may or may not be a good thing depending upon how thing progress in the next couple of months. We had gotten a really high appraisal a couple of years ago, that warped our view of how much we should expect to get for the place. Turns out bankers like to give money to people with good credit, and that is one area where my ex and I shine quite brightly. If your house appraises for more money, the bank is able to lend you more money, see how it works?

After the meeting with the real estate agent, I took the Takara out for a little spin (just to the cafe). There was still some work that I needed to do, orders to place and the like. I also used it as an opportunity to grab myself some quick grub, nothing like free food eh? I left the cafe and was thinking about heading to the chatterbox for some internet/beer. I ended up taking the long way, instead of 1 mile, I ended up going about 10. Oops, I must have missed a turn someplace along the way, wasn't the chatterbox in NE?

Today the cable guy told me that the problem with my internet is the drop from the pole, which requires two technicians to repair. That means that I may in fact not have the internet the entire weekend *grumble*.

The rest of my day has been spent outside enjoying the 55 degree weather and working out in the yard. I fixed the stone wall I built this summer, some knucklehead hit it with their car sometime this winter. There wasn't any horrible damage, just a little re-stacking of the bricks was all it took. I have the feeling the car took the bulk of the damage, yet no one attempted to contact me about it, silly people.

Aside from the wall I have cleaned out all of my gutters, raked some leaves and generally straightened up my yard. If I do end up selling the house, I would be well served to have everything nice and neat.

Oh, Brooklyn Girl is doing a MNPLS encore this Monday, line up for your tickets people.

For the time being.

Well for the time being the internet seems to be working in my house. I am near convinced that it will crap out on me soon enough though, probably right when I try and post this.

First off the damn car. I took it in because of the check engine light remember? Come to find out that some air-flow sensor was out of whack and I would have to pay 400 dollars to get it fixed. I just paid 400 dollars for a check up a month ago, the prospect of paying 800 dollars in the span of a month for a car I hardly ever drive just wasn't appealing to me. I said to hell with it, and decided to just put off the repairs until my financial situation was a little more stable. I don't really need to drive the car at all, and at worst all that would be affected would be the gas mileage and the power of the car a little. I still had to pay 55 dollars for them to even look at the car, but at least I got a car wash out of the deal. I tried to argue that the repair should have been covered in the extended warranty we bought with the car, but they told me it wasn't. I admit I got a little pissy, it had in fact been a long stressful day and I had been yelling at people all day. First the sysco driver when he had chemicals stacked on top of food, then the poor guy working the service counter. In all honesty I just expressed my ill feelings about the situation, I don't think I really raised my voice, but he sure knew I wasn't happy.

Fast forward to this afternoon.

My voicemail rings, so I have a message. I of course thought at first that it was Brooklyn Grl, but amazingly enough it wasn't. The guy (Gene) who I dealt with at the service counter was kind enough to look into my extended warranty and notice that in fact the airflow sensor was covered under the policy. So now not only do I get my car fixed up for free, but I get the 55 dollars I paid back, how flipping awesome is that?

Off subject I took the new Miyata for a little test run last night, suffice to say I am happy.

Work was slamming busy, just how I like it.

Um That is all.

Peace.

Dang Internet.

Well I am here waiting for my car to get checked out at the dealership, something keeps on kicking the check engine light on. Funny how this started happening just after I took the car in for the 40k check up. Weird even more is that the light just goes off after a while, freaky.

The internet is broken at my house again, which is more than a little aggravating. I don't know what the deal is, but I have another appointment to get it checked out. Lately my life is chuck full of little appointments, left and right I am just busy getting stuff ready either at work or home. Contractors, real estate agents, cable guys, inspectors, salesmen etc. And really I need to find myself a lawyer as well, probably would be a good idea given all the crap I am going to have to do in the next couple of months.

I did start myself a little day planner, that way I will not forget my appointments and I can better plan and schedule. Up until now I have had no problem keeping things straight just in my head, but things are getting more complicated as I get older.

Now onto bike stuff.

I just bought a bike yesterday. I really didn't need it, one thing I have plenty of are bicycles. This was just a deal which I could not pass up, 15 dollars at savers for a Miyata Felipe sized. Anyone who knows me will be able to tell that I have a little of an unhealthy obsession with anything Miyata based. Probably has something to do with with my first ever road bike being a Pro Miyata which I still have. From that point, everytime I see a reasonably good priced Miyata I just suck it up. This one is a Miyata Liberty, in really good condition for it's age, little to no rust on the frame and perfect components. There was a few minor things which I had to do to get the bike running nice, like replace the bar tape, rear wheel (broken spoke) and adjust the derailers and brakes. There was a little issue with either the crankarm, pedal or BB when I took it out on it's maiden voyage. I took the crankarms off when I got the bike home and noticed that the spindle was cracked a little, not really rideable. So I simply replaced the BB with a sealed cartridge one I had lying around and the bike was good to go. I didn't get the chance to ride it after that, but you can believe that I will here after I get home.

First wait for the car to be fixed.

All Food Post

Well enough about all that petty stupid personal shit that doesn't really matter all that much, this post is going to be dedicated to entirely food.

First off pasta, this probably isn't going to be coming as much of a surprise to anyone who has had even the smallest conversation with me in the last coupe of weeks, but I am near obsessed with my fresh pasta. What I really enjoy is how people are reacting to it, so dang positive. This week the pasta is very simple, mushrooms (wild blend), leeks, rainbow chard, san marzanos, truffle oil, and parsley thyme puree. Simple but I really like it, of course or else I wouldn't have put it on the menu in the first place. The pasta this week is tagliatelle, not quite as wide as paparadelle but close. Up until today we were using just the regular semolina pasta dough recipe which I have pretty much perfected over the last couple of years. Tonight while going through the cooler, I noticed that someone blanched, shocked, and pureed all the watercress left over from last weeks menu. So there in front of me was a half a gallon of bright green liquid, just begging to be utilized. Usually my pasta dough is just eggs, semolina, salt and olive oil. Tonight I omitted half the amount of eggs, and subbed a quantity of the cress puree. The resulting pasta dough was vibrant green, and lucky for me still stiff enough to keep the elusive al dente we all crave. So for the rest of the week the menu will just say tagliatelle, but it will with the green pasta. For the same reason the menu just says "mushrooms" but I am using a wild mushroom blend. I would rather people be surprised than disappointed.

Also in terms of pasta, I made my first vegan pasta dough tonight. I was a little worried about how the pasta would hold up not having the eggs as a binder, but it turned out just fine. The only problem was an easily rectifiable one, I used a bit too much water. But just to think about how this will ease menu writing, I can always think of vegan pasta ideas, that shit is easy. Tim, one of our resident vegan employees was really grateful and excited about the prospect of having vegan pasta on the menu. I think it will be a hit, while usually our vegan entrees are by far the lower sellers. The switch to pasta might just reverse this trend a little.

Other stupid food stuff.

The Ahi BLT has made a triumphant return to the b'wood menu, and first day it was vaulted to #1 status. There was a reason I brought it back, it was too popular not to.

The curried egg salad sandwich, really fucking good, surprisingly so. I put it on the menu thinking about people would enjoy it, even if I didn't. Last night I tried a little bit right after I made it, and proceeded to eat an entire sandwich. Then again, curry, eggs, mayo, how can you go wrong?

I will spare you all more details about the menu this week, but suffice to say I am happy with almost everything. The pizza with drunken golden raisins, lemon zest, gorgonzola and garlic is particularly good (to me).

I am right now writing next weeks menu though, so if any of you have suggestions, kick them my way a'ight?

Striving for Simplicity.

How is it that despite my greatest and grandest efforts to make the every day running of my life easier, things never are. I try and try to just relax and be one of those drones whose lives are filled to the point where everything just flows easy, that just isn’t me. I have this knack for complication and difficulty. I think that in general most people would never be happy with the simplistic easy life, and I suppose I am the same. I would probably get bored and quickly at that if my life was trouble-free, of which it is anything but right now.

Then again what really is there to expect? There really isn’t much to do but to keep on doing what you are doing, hoping for the best and improving upon things when you can. Complacency would be nice, but it was never my strong suit. I must like it when I have problems to fix, that is the best I can figure.

But off subject, I really have been having a problem getting to bed early, even with a broken (again) internet connection.

Again off subject, more and more random calls from Spanish speaking people I don’t know looking for work, I swear someone posted my name on a board someplace.

Get'n'Inspected.

Here in about 10 minutes I get to go through the fun task of someone pointing out all of the little nuances which I should fix before I sell my house. I cannot really think of anything really egregiously bad that I should be worried about. Most of the plumbing is new, the roof is in OK shape, the electrical work is all tip-top. Then again I am looking at things with nice rose tinted glasses, hoping for the best. It doesn't really matter that much though, if there is something really bad that needs to be fixed, there isn't much to do but to fix it. Better to have a house in fine condition before trying to sell it.

I think one of my friends is having an art gallery opening tonight, I cannot for the life of me find his flyer for it though. I might just have to call some people and track that info down. He is a courier in the Minneaplo, but all of these paintings supposedly are of automobiles. Not just cars, but cars in the midst of wrecking, so all beat up and flying all over the place. I wonder if his car destruction fantasies may have something to do with his not having a car. Hmm, I am going to ask him about that tonight. I am pretty sure the show is at 1on1 but like I said I am not sure.

Speaking of cars, I have to go get mine from across town here in a bit. I wasn't wasted or anything last night, but I didn't feel comfortable leaving behind the wheel. So either I bus or bike it over to the house I was at last night, really I might opt for he bus. I just vacuumed out the car, it was pretty full of bike dirt before. We were supposed to paint this girls new apartment last night, but by the time I got there she was already a little tipsy. It was after about an hour that we realized she didn't have any rollers, and had not chosen a paint color yet. She had 6 different (very different) colors and was trying to get me to help her do some paint mixing. We ended up just drinking beer, eating luce and playing silly games, good times.

Like.

Alright where to begin.

Yesterday was freaking loch, busy and stressful and generally crazy. Tensions were running much higher than they need be in the bakers meeting, things were said and tones were used which probably shouldn't have been. Not by myself mind you, but between the bakers themselves. That said I had to pull sit some people down and do some fun ironing out of the situation. Again fun to be el Jefe.

After that I had to speed up to Blaine to bring back the kitchen-aid which I had just brought in to be serviced about 1.5 months ago. There is only one place which services those shorty little mixers, and it is all the way in the northern suburbs, where only the brave tread. Back down highway 100 to Costco, I did one of the fastest single costco runs to date. At least until I was stuck behind this lady writing a check... Grrr... I know I shouldn't be impatient but sometimes I just am.

Back to work.

Busy, but good. The pasta which I put on the menu again was the best seller, always an ego boost. I don't know how accurate of a representation it was though, near every employee had pasta as well. Either way I was really happy with the response, but than again that is pretty much what I was expecting.

Work done, hit the C-Box up for a quick post 12 hour shift cerveza. But it seems that my work wasn't quite done at that point, no little silly me brought my laptop and scheduling shit inside. So instead of relaxing I did work shit until around 11:30. Headed home, hit the hay, woke up at 6 to do it all over again. This time I finished work at around 2:30, so all isn't bad. My house still is in dire need of packing and organizing if I want it to be presentable to potential buyers. I am still eagerly awaiting word as to what the realtor thinks the house will go for, keep your fingers crossed people.
